Workshop 1 – Exploring tikanga within contemporary contexts

Exploring tikanga within contemporary contexts

Kia ora koutou,
As part of building our online marketplace and capability for supporting Māori business across Te Tauihu we have a suite of workshops taking place. We would like to introduce our first workshop. This topic is brought to us by experienced facilitators who will help us explore how to uphold tikanga while navigating and applying ancestral knowledge and practices within contemporary contexts.
Maximum number for this workshop are 12.

Our Facilitators

Naomi Aporo-Manihera (Ngāti Kahungunu, Rangitāne, Ngai Tahu) Hamuera Manihera (Ngāti Kuia, Ngāti Apa, Ngāti Koata)

Naomi and Hamuera are husband and wife based in Whakatū. While they both wear a number of hats in professional and iwi contexts, they are passionate about Te Tauihu and revitalisation of mātauranga Māori. Naomi’s primary mahi is in the land and water science sector, but she is also a local photographer that enjoys capturing stories of the whenua and the ngahere. Hamuera is the Taonga Māori Collections Manager for the Nelson Provincial Museum, but also has a strong background in conservation and mahi toi. He is one of the leading weaving practitioners within Kurahaupō Te Tauihu. Both Naomi and Hamuera have strong interests in Māori history, art and design. They are passionate about exploring how to uphold tikanga while navigating at the edges of applying ancestral knowledge and practices within contemporary contexts.
